12 of the best moments from the past year
It’s now been one year since Paisley launched its bid for UK City of Culture 2021...and what a year it’s been! Here’s a small selection of highlights from the past 12 months
1) Paisley 2021 launched – Nov 2015
More than 350 people gathered in Paisley Abbey for the official launch of Paisley 2021, hosted by broadcaster Shereen Nanjani, and featuring a performance by Pace Theatre Group.
2) Indian fashion show – Jan 2016
The Paisley Pattern starred in a cross-cultural fashion extravaganza in Paisley Abbey featuring students from India and Scotland, thanks to Glasgow Kelvin College.
3) First cultural conversation - Feb
Members of the local creative scene met in Paisley Town Hall for a cultural conversation with the Paisley 2021 team allowing them to help shape the content of the bid
4) St Mirren stadium signs unveiled - Feb
St Mirren FC unveiled new branding at the newly-renamed Paisley 2021 Stadium to show their support for the bid.
5) Paisley Food Festival – Apr
Thousands of visitors enjoyed street food from across the globe during the Paisley Food Festival, taking place alongside the established Beer Festival, Scotland’s largest.
6) British Pipe Band Championships – May
A tartan army of more than 4,000 pipers and drummers descended on St James Playing Fields for one of the biggest events in world piping.
7) Scottish Album of the Year Award – June
Paisley Town Hall was all lit up for one of the biggest dates in the country’s musical calendar when it hosted the SAY Award on the first time it had ever left Glasgow.
8) Glasgow Airport back the bid – June
The bid was cleared for take-off when it was backed by bosses at Glasgow Airport – with attractions including a Paisley-themed 3D-effect artwork created by artist Duncan Wilson.
9) Pride of Paisley lions on the prowl – July
One of the mane events of the summer took place when the hugely-popular Pride of Paisley lions were unveiled by the Paisley First business improvement district.
10) Band hails taxi in time for T – July
Paisley band The Vegan Leather were picked up in Abbey Close in a Paisley 2021 branded taxi ahead of their slot at the annual T in the Park music festival.
11) PACE kids take Paisley to London – Sep
Young people from PACE Theatre Group led a delegation to London for a reception in the Houses of Commons celebrating the town’s creative scene.
12) The Spree festival returns - Oct
The annual festival of music, comedy and more took over the town centre for a fifth year – with the bulk of the action in the Spiegeltent in County Square.
