Jim Barrie, Timber Preservation Manager at City Gate Construction and an accomplished artist, reckons winning UK City of Culture 2021 will paint a bright future for Paisley and Renfrewshire.
City Gate Construction is a large business employing over 120 people and we take our responsibility to the community very seriously. We have always believed that successful businesses need to give something back.
And there can be no better way of helping communities than becoming UK City of Culture.
As a business with deep-roots in the town (our offices are in MacDowall Street) we know of the vibrancy of the communities that make up Renfrewshire.
That’s why we wanted to do our bit this year by launching “Afternoon Tea with CGC” offering thousands of pounds in funding to give housing associations the means to run afternoon teas. The aim is fight loneliness and isolation by bringing people together and several local housing associations have already hosted their events. It is just one way we are making a difference.
Away from work I love nothing better than to paint and feel very privileged that I am donating one of my works to Accord Hospice for their exhibition and auction in September – as is my great friend the internationally-renowned artist John Damari.
John lives in Renfrewshire and has been an inspiration to me when it comes to art. John is well known for his outstanding skill as a painter and his prolific charity endeavours.
The benefits to Renfrewshire in winning the Bid are crystal clear - the economic impact of such an endorsement is huge but it’s what happens at grass roots level that is most important.
Transforming Paisley’s image nationally and internationally is undoubtedly great news. But it is the communities who stand to gain most. Tackling poverty and making it easy for every child and family to access cultural activity and join in and have fun is what matters most to me and CGC.
Meanwhile, CGC’s large fleet of vans complete with Paisley 2021 stickers are hitting the road every day spreading the word about the Bid. We will keep on motoring till we win!"
