Paisley Buddy Birthday: Ian Robertson Hamilton QC
Today (13 September) is the birthday of a famous Paisley buddy – Ian Robertson Hamilton QC. Way back in 1950, Ian was one of four Scottish students who removed the Stone of Destiny from its place under the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey.
It’s a brilliant connection between Paisley and Perth as both places are bidding for UK City of Culture 2021.
The Stone was originally used for the coronation of Scottish monarchs. In 1296 the stone was taken to England by Edward I as a means to bolster his claim to the throne of Scotland. It was also used to coronate British monarchs after the Act of Union in 1707.
Paisley’s never been shy of its radicals and we’re proud to have such a famous Paisley Buddy – born in 1925 – as part of our fantastic wealth of heritage.
Luckily for Ian, he and his accomplices were charged but never prosecuted. The Stone came back to Scotland in 1996, where it now sits in Edinburgh.
