Digital Tapestry commission will celebrate links between Paisley and India

Paisley 2021 are inviting proposals from visual artists, designers and applied artists to apply for our Paisley and Jodhpur Digital Tapestry Commission as part of the The Spree Festival 2017

This year, the festival is twinned with the Jodhpur Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) which takes place in Jodhpur, India between 5-9 October 2017. The theme of The Spree Festival in 2017 is friendship, and the twinning of the two festivals seeks to celebrate and mark the shared history of Paisley and Jodhpur. Both cities have a strong relationship with the textiles industry and the Paisley Pattern itself.

Each festival has a focus and desire to engage young people with its programme. This year, The Spree Festival and RIFF will work together to deliver two new commissions facilitating collaboration and exchange between young people in each location - a Musical Tapestry and a Digital Tapestry.

We are currently inviting proposals from visual artists, designers and applied artist to undertake a commission as part of the Digital Tapestry, working with 50 young people based in Renfrewshire. The successful candidate will receive a budget of £2,500 to create an artwork that acts as a public representation of the Digital Tapestry created by young people in Renfrewshire and Paisley over 23 days in October 2017.

The project aims to:

  • Encourage international collaboration to form strong relationships between Paisley and Jodhpur and to encourage future opportunities for exchange.
  • Encourage young people to look at their environment in creative ways and to learn about another culture.
  • Produce a public artwork that is genuinely informed and influenced by young people.
  • Create a celebratory moment highlighting and marking the relationship between Paisley and Jodphur.

The medium, format, form and public nature of the work is left open to interpretation by the artist but they will be required to engage with the ongoing online dialogue created through the Digital Tapestry.

This commission offers an excellent opportunity for an artist, designer or applied artist to work with young people in both locations, creating long-lasting and inspiring experiences. It also offers the chance to foster professional relationships with other creative professionals living and working in India.

The deadline for application is Sunday 24th September. For full details on how to apply, please download the Digital Tapestry Brief:
